Dental photo mirrors are designed specifically for intraoral photography, allowing clinicians to capture clear views of areas that are difficult to photograph directly. They are commonly used to document occlusal, lingual, and buccal perspectives for case presentations, treatment planning, patient education, and before-and-after records.

ILLUCO Photo Mirrors feature high-reflectivity optical surfaces that help produce sharp, true-to-color images while minimizing distortion and glare during clinical photography.

Cleaning & Autoclave Guidelines

  • Precautions

Do not use if the packaging is damaged, or if the product shows signs of damage or defects.

Handle with care to prevent damage to the mirror surface.

Ensure the mirror is properly cleaned and sterilized before each use.

  • Pre-Cleaning Prep

Securely place dental mirrors into an instrument holder (e.g., tray or cassette) before cleaning.

  • Cleaning Methods

Manual: Wash manually using a non-corrosive, low-foaming neutral detergent.

Ultrasonic: Refer to the manufacturer's operating instructions and guidelines. Use with caution, as ultrasonic cleaning may degrade the performance of the hydrophobic coating on mirror surfaces.

Automated Washer: Refer to the manufacturer's operating instructions and guidelines.

After cleaning, thoroughly rinse dental mirrors.

  • Autoclaving Guidelines

Follow the autoclave manufacturer's operating instructions and guidelines for sterilization. This product can withstand the following conditions:

    • 5 minutes at 273°F (134°C)
    • 20 minutes at 250°F (121°C)
    • Do NOT exceed 277°F (136°C) to prevent damage

  • Storage

After sterilization, store the dental mirror in a clean, dry, and dust-free environment. Regularly inspect the mirror for signs of wear, such as scratches or degradation. Replace as needed to maintain optimal performance.

Are ILLUCO dental mirrors waterproof?

ILLUCO dental mirrors feature a hydrophobic (water-repellent) coating, not a waterproof seal. This is an important distinction. The coating causes water to bead up and roll off the mirror surface, keeping it clear and fog-resistant during procedures. However, it does not mean the mirror can be submerged in liquid or soaked without consequence.

For cleaning, use a gentle manual wash with a non-corrosive neutral detergent, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely before autoclaving. Prolonged exposure to moisture, soaking in chemical disinfectants, or placing wet mirrors directly into an autoclave can degrade the hydrophobic coating over time and compromise the mirror's performance and longevity.

Think of it like a water-resistant watch; The product handles the environment it's designed for beautifully, but needs to be cared for correctly to stay that way.

Can ILLUCO dental mirrors be autoclaved? What are the correct settings?

Yes - ILLUCO dental mirrors are fully autoclavable and designed to withstand repeated sterilization cycles.

Please follow these parameters to avoid damaging your mirrors:

  • 5 minutes at 273°F (134°C), or
  • 20 minutes at 250°F (121°C)
  • Do not exceed 277°F (136°C)

Exceeding the maximum temperature (even briefly) can permanently damage the mirror coating and glass. Always follow both your autoclave manufacturer's instructions and these product guidelines.

Do I need to do anything before placing the mirrors in the autoclave?

Yes, and this step is critical.

Mirrors must be thoroughly cleaned and completely dried before autoclaving.

Skipping the cleaning step means organic debris (saliva, blood) can shield microorganisms and cause sterilization to fail, even in a properly functioning autoclave. After cleaning with a non-corrosive neutral detergent, rinse thoroughly and allow mirrors to dry completely! Wet instruments placed in an autoclave can compromise sterile packaging after the cycle.

For a full step-by-step guide, see our cleaning and sterilization blog.

My mirror surface looks foggy or stained after autoclaving. What went wrong?

This is usually caused by one of three things:

  • Moisture remaining on the mirror before autoclaving
  • Detergent residue that wasn't fully rinsed off
  • Sterilization temperatures exceeding the 277°F (136°C) maximum

Make sure mirrors are completely dry before each cycle, that all detergent is thoroughly rinsed away after cleaning, and that your autoclave is not running a "quick cycle" program, which can cause rapid temperature swings that stress the glass and coating.

If fogging or staining persists after addressing these factors, the mirror may need to be replaced.

Is ultrasonic cleaning safe for ILLUCO dental mirrors?

Use with caution. Ultrasonic cleaning can degrade the hydrophobic coating on the mirror surface over time, and the vibration can cause instruments to contact one another, potentially scratching the reflective surface.

If you use an ultrasonic cleaner, isolate the mirrors from other instruments. For best results, manual washing with a soft brush and neutral detergent is the recommended cleaning method for ILLUCO mirrors.

What sizes and types of dental mirrors does ILLUCO offer?

ILLUCO currently offers :

  • Mouth mirror kits (mirror head + handle)
  • Mirror heads only (for those who already have handles)
  • Individual handles
  • Intraoral photo mirrors

Mouth mirrors are currently available in Size 4, with a larger 32mm option coming soon for clinicians who need a wider field of view. We are also expanding our lineup with double-sided dental mirrors, ideal for workflows that require reflection from both surfaces.

Photo mirrors come in multiple shapes for full-arch, occlusal, buccal, and lingual photography.

Not sure which is right for your workflow? See our guide to mirror shapes and sizes or contact our specialists.
